May 24, 2010 - Sparks Wins Wild Stock Four Main Event
Fans came out to see some thrilling dirt racing Saturday night at East Lincoln Speedway. The show was fun and fast, with time left afterward for those who wanted to catch the end of the All-Star Race in Charlotte.
The show kicked off with 12 cars taking to the track in the 15 lap Stock Fours feature. Last week’s winner, Dylan O’Daniel, took the lead followed by Wayne Curtis and Lee Oiler. After the caution flag came out on lap three, O’Daniel led two more laps until he got loose off turn four. The three leaders got together along the front stretch and were relegated to the back for the restart. Logan Sparks was the new leader followed by Hank Kiefer and Jeff Crump. The caution came out with nine laps down as Crump had troubles and slowed down the backstretch. Curtis also went pitside to change a right rear flat. Sparks led again on the restart while O’Daniel and Kiefer made their way back to the second and third positions. O’Daniel stuck tightly to the back of Logan as they manuevered their way through lap traffic. The caution came out once more and on the restart O’Daniel and Sparks made contact. On the final lap, Sparks pulled away, O’Daniel got sideways and cars bunched up behind him. A dramatic crash had O’Daniel shooting backwards down the infield chute off turn four and Hank Kiefer plowing head-on into the outside front stretch wall destroying his front end. Sparks sailed neatly across the finish for his first win of the year. Curtis was second, Oiler third, Calen Holden fourth and David Lucas fifth.
Five cars were signed in for the 15 lap Mini Sprint main event. Division points leader Darren Hasty started upfront alongside Terry Peters. Peters flashed to the front followed by Brian Roseman and Hasty. The only caution came out at lap 10 when Kyle Wilson slowed and took his car to the pits. Peters led flag to flag and claimed his fifth win of the season. Roseman took second with Hasty in third, George Blaney in fourth and Wilson in fifth.
Legends were back for the evening and the battle was between Robert Poole and Josh Morrow. Poole led laps one and two until Morrow passed him down the backstretch on lap three. Poole hung close making several attempts to dive to inside on Morrow. The two leaders had a full straightaway lead on the second group of cars. Chandler Levan, Lee Jordan, Rick Little and Bill Gardner had a close race going for spots three to six. Morrow was not to be denied, taking the win over Poole. Levan followed in third, Little in fourth and Gardner in fifth.
The 15 lap Super Stock Four feature started with last week’s winner, Lincolnton’s Randy Powell on the front row alongside division point’s leader Jennings Herman. Powell took the lead followed by Herman in second and Brian Nuhfer in third. The top cars ran single file and Powell extended his lead by four car lengths over Herman. Powell worked lap traffic by the midway point and the drivers went flag to flag in a rare caution-free race. Powell got his second win of the season with Herman coming in second. Nuhfer, Josh Cook and Darryl Roark rounded out the top five.
The 20 lap Limited Sportsman’s feature was all ‘Whites’ for a second week in a row. The 26W mean machine of Brandon White jumped to the lead followed by Ronnie White and Lynn Mercer. The caution came out with three laps in when Scott Freeman’s car stopped along the backstretch. The Whites continued one, two, while a strong run by Stanley’s Jeff Graves put him into the third position. Mercer had to go pitside and Blane Huffman moved up to the fourth spot. Brandon White drove through lap traffic by midway and continued his quest for the checkered flag. He crossed the line in first followed by Ronnie White, Graves, Huffman and Keith Bowman.
After Mark Woody’s car was smashed in last week’s Renegades action, he spent over forty hours repairing the back end to bring it back to the racetrack. Woody started on the front row of the 15 lap feature with Jamie Major. Major grabbed the lead followed by Woody and Belmont’s Jimbo Bray. After two laps the car driven by Chris Stowe stopped along the front stretch and brought out the first caution. A second quick caution flag flew as Danny Garcia spun off turn four. Major led for two more laps with Woody in second and points leader Steve Newsome up to third. Suddenly a wheel decided to leave Major’s vehicle bouncing on the track between turns one and two. The last ten laps belonged to Woody. He drove to the checkered flag followed by Newsome in second and Bray in third. Tyler Hyatt and Brian Toler rounded out the top five. It was Woody’s first win of the season after a two year drought.
